Prohibition, Organized Crime, Etcetera
Prohibition was the banning of alcohol. The 18th amendment in the constitution, of 1919, banned the manufacture, distribution, and sale of alcohol in the United States. The Volstead act then was passed, enforcing this amendment. Advocates of Prohibition were called “drys”, while opponents were called “wets”. Prohibition brought an increase in organized crime. Bootlegging was selling illegal alcohol. Speakeasies were secret drinking establishments. Al Capone was a Chicago gang leader, and is one of the most famous criminals of all time. He not only sold illegal alcohol but was involved in prostitution, drugs, robbery and murder.
